African Agenda Milestones

  • Most recently organised ICA 2010, the International Congress of Actuaries, a 6-day event held at the CTICC in March 2010, with 2,000 participants. The 5-day programme included 2 catered evening events for in excess of 1,500 guests and 5 days of sessions consisting of 90 sessions across 10 rooms and 200 speakers. Keynote Speakers included Minster of Finance Pravin Gordhan and Dr Mamphela Ramphele. Other responsibilities included the production of a social programme inclusive of outdoor social events and dinners at the Premier?s residence and at the Castle of Good Hope; the development of an intricate afternoon excursions programme for delegates and accompanying persons; an exhibition for the associated trade; and the raising of sponsorship which attracted support in excess of R3,250,000.
  • Organised AORTIC 2009, the 7th international cancer conference of the African Organisation for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC) in November 2009. Held in Dar es Salaam and attended by 750 delegates (excluding accompanying persons) this event was a follow-up to the exceptionally successful event hosted in Cape Town in 2007. The 5-day programme comprised more than 50 sessions and 200 speakers, an exhibition for the associated trade and included a welcome address by the President of Tanzania.
  • Organised the NIDS launch conference in August 2009. Over 100 academics and policy makers attended this 2-day conference in Irene, hosted by Southern African Labour and Development Research Unit (SALDRU) at the University of Cape Town?s School of Economics. The Minister of Planning, Trevor Manuel was the guest speaker at the workshop dinner.
  • Organised the 3rd Stop Cervical Cancer in Africa Conference in July 2009. Hosted by the Princess Nikky
    Breast Cancer Foundation, the conference was attended by medical delegates and African dignitaries at
    the Lord Charles Hotel in Somerset West, Cape Town.
  • Organised the Actuarial Society of South Africa´s 2009 Convention in May 2009. This convention, held in
    Johannesburg at the Sandton Convention Centre, attracted approximately 700 delegates.
  • Organised the World Rowing Federation´s 2009 Extraordinary Congress, held in Cape Town in February
    2009 and hosted 150 delegates.
  • Organised the Actuarial Society of South Africa´s Social Security and Retirement Reform 2008 Conference
    in September 2008. This conference was held in Johannesburg and attracted 180 delegates.
  • Organised the Actuarial Society of South Africa´s Health Care 2008 Conference in August 2008. This
    conference was held in Johannesburg and attracted 120 delegates.
  • Actuarial Society Convention 2007. 2–day annual convention of the Actuarial Society of South Africa, held
    that year in Johannesburg at the Sandton Convention Centre, with over 500 delegates.
  • AORTIC 2007. Over 400 medical delegates from 46 countries attended this 5–day conference, hosted
    by the African Organisation for Research and Training in Cancer. The programme comprised 5 parallel
    sessions, 141 speakers and oral presenters and 116 poster presenters. Logistical management included
    a social programme, arrangements for more than 170 bursary recipients, a large exhibition for partner
    organisations and the trade and an intricate programme with 7 concurrent venues.
  • SAACI 2007. In 2007 we were honoured to be given the opportunity to organise a conference and
    exhibition for 250 of our peers: the annual conference of the Southern African Association for the
    Conference Industry (SAACI) held in July at the ArabellaSheraton Grand Hotel (now Westin Grand Cape
    Town Arabella Quays). Responsible for programme development and logistical management, we also
    sat on the organising committee. VIPs on the programme included Minister of Environmental Affairs and
    Tourism Marthinus van Schalkwyk and Western Cape Premier Ebrahim Rasool.
  • AES 2007. This academic gathering was the 12th annual AES Conference, hosted by the African
    Econometrics Society and held at the Southern Sun the Cape Sun Hotel. Delegates from all over Africa
    attended the 2-day conference, which included plenary and parallel sessions and a conference dinner at
    Kirstenbosch.
  • Organised the Open Society Institute 2007 Partners Meeting held in June 2007 and attended by 120
    international delegates.
  • NMT 2007. This 3–day sustainable transport conference was held in February 2007 in Midrand and
    was hosted by the South African Department of Transport. VIPs on the programme and in attendance
    included Minster of Transport Jeff Radebe, Department of Transport Director–General Mpumi Mpofu, and
    representatives of the FIFA Soccer World Cup 2010 LOC.
  • IAAHS 2007. The International Actuarial Association Health Section Colloquium took place in May 2007
    and hosted over 225 international delegates from 25 countries. Fully responsible for the programme
    development, we managed a committee of 8 and designed a 4–day programme with 43 speakers. We also
    assisted with fundraising and the sponsorship receipts exceeded budgeted expectations considerably. In
    total over R400 000 was raised.
  • Stroke 2006. We acted as the Destination Management Company for Kenes International´s 2500–delegate
    medical congress in October 2006. Responsibilities included transport planning, day trips and pre- and
    post–congress tours.
  • Velo Mondial 2006. A 5-day international sustainable transport conference for 350 delegates, hosted
    by the City of Cape Town and held at the CTICC. Conference elements included a 4–day scientific
    programme with more than 40 speakers and 91 poster presentations, and a full day of technical site visits.
    VIPs on the programme included Minister of Transport Jeff Radebe, Professor Tim Noakes of the Sports
    Science Institute, Dr Carlos Dora of the WHO and cycling commentator Phil Liggett. The conference was
    scheduled to coincide with the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour and logistical arrangements included,
    group cycle tour registration and post–race reception.
  • CMI Colloquium 2006. The Comité Maritime International, an international maritime law association,
    holds a 3–day colloquium every 3 years in a city with a maritime history and industry. The most recent
    colloquium was held in Cape Town in February 2006, hosted by the South African Maritime Law
    Association (SAMLA). 320 delegates attended a 3–day scientific programme complemented by a lavish
    social programme including a welcome reception, an afternoon excursion to the winelands and a gala
    dinner.
  • Organised an Eskom corporate awards event for 1700 people in December 2004.
  • Organised Access 2004, a 3–day conference on disability hosted by the Provincial Government of the Western Cape in November 2004, which attracted 350 delegates.
  • Organised the Entertainment Education 2004 international conference on educational media, a 4–day conference for 400 delegates.
